Starting a new job at a new company during a pandemic can’t be easy, Colm Mulvey is IBEX’s newest employee (for now) and he’s integrated incredible well into the IBEX team!

Colm works as a software engineer alongside the rest of our software team and supports the development of IBEX’s many software products. To learn a little more about Colm, I asked him a few questions…

A quick summary of what you do at IBEX?
I work in the Software Engineering team at IBEX, supporting the production of our software products.

How did you find yourself at IBEX?
I was looking for a C/C++ position where I could work on a cutting-edge product that would make a real difference in the world. The opportunity to join IBEX last year to work on medical applications gave me this chance and I’ve seized it with both hands.

Professional background, life outside of work, and some key interests?
I started programming the BBC micro around 1982, and have enjoyed the precision and rapidity of computing ever since. While studying for a BSc.Eng. in electronics and computing, I was constantly drawn to model theoretical electronics and physics with software. My career so far has rarely been far from embedded systems. I now look forward to the challenges that come with harnessing high-performance GPUs to assist with challenges from the medical field. Outside of work, I’m a keen windsurfer, a happy cyclist, and a ball-room dabbler!

A moment in life that you’ll never forget
Taking our new-born daughter home with us in 2009. This is a moment when you ask if you’re really qualified for the tasks ahead and step-by-step, and not without mistakes, you find a path.

Your go-to productivity trick?
I long held that silence is critical when establishing focus, but once achieved, the rapid code-build-test cycles of software development are difficult to derail. A more recent discovery made while working from home is that a 20 minute run before breakfast can be a great way to energise the day!

What’s surprised you about working at IBEX?
I was impressed with the warm welcome from all areas of the company. There is an open atmosphere with frequent updates that are to the point yet refreshingly interesting.
